Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan has entered into its second week at the box office. The makers had already sold the OTT streaming rights of the film, and it holds a four-week window in theatres before going online. Currently running at around Rs 134 crore nett at the Indian box office, the investigative drama is the only Rajinikanth-starrer to have been released this year.
The streaming rights of the film are sold to Prime Video. Vettaiyan hit the screens during the Dussehra weekend, on October 10, and as per the four-week window rule, it is likely to release on Prime Video after the Diwali festivities. While the official release date is not out yet, the film might go online around November 7-9.
Directed by TJ Gnananvel, Vettaiyan is based on encounter killing and the makers are now already thinking about curating a prequel to the film. During a media interaction in Hyderabad recently, director Gnanavel announced that he is deeply inspired by the subject of police encounter killing and would like to explore more on the same lines in the prequel.
“I’m more interested in developing a prequel that could dive deeper into Athiyan’s journey. This adds layers to the existing story. Encounter killings have always affected me when I read about them in the news. This film challenges whether these encounters are justified or fabricated, revealing what seems straightforward often has deeper issues,” he explained to the Hyderabad media over a Zoom call.
The film was produced by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions and had music by Anirudh Ravichandran.
